Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
