2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Feedback
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a distinct game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Key Hires
The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.
The belief in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. Following a period of discussions, he officially joins us on next week.
His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having spent the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all excited to persist observing the development of the game in the time to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Head
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
